Whiteboard buying guide: which size, and how to keep it clean

How to pick the right whiteboard size for an office, classroom or home, when a board with a stand makes sense, and the simple habits that stop a board from staining.

A whiteboard is one of the cheapest tools that really changes how a team works. Plans become visible, meetings get shorter and nothing is forgotten on a scrap of paper. Choosing one takes two decisions: the size, and whether it hangs on the wall or stands on legs.

Which size do you need?

Buy for the room and for how far away people sit. A board that is too small fills up in five minutes.

SizeGood for
40 × 60 cmA desk, a kitchen, a child's study corner
60 × 90 cmA small office or a team of two or three
90 × 120 cmA manager's office or a small meeting room
120 × 180 cmA meeting room or training room
120 × 240 cmA classroom or a large conference room

If you are unsure between two sizes, take the bigger one. Nobody has ever complained that a whiteboard was too large.

Wall board or board with a stand?

A wall-mounted board costs less and saves floor space. It needs a solid wall and someone to drill it.

A board with a stand can move between rooms and needs no drilling, which helps in rented offices. Many stands let you flip the board to use both sides. We keep boards with stands as well as wall boards.

Magnetic or not?

A magnetic board lets you hold papers, schedules and drawings with small magnets, so it works as a notice board too. If that matters to you, ask us which sizes are magnetic before you order.

Flip charts

For training sessions and workshops, a flip chart keeps each page of notes instead of wiping it away. You can tear the sheets off and put them on the wall, or take them back to the office.

The right markers

Use only whiteboard markers on a whiteboard. Keep a set of four colours: black and blue for writing, red and green for highlighting. Store markers lying flat with the cap on tight, and they last much longer.

Someone used a permanent marker on the board? Write over the marks with a whiteboard marker, wait a few seconds and wipe. The fresh ink loosens the old ink.

How to keep a board clean

  • Wipe the board at the end of each day. Ink left for weeks leaves shadows.
  • Use a proper board eraser and wash or replace it when it gets dark.
  • Once a week, clean the whole surface with a damp cloth or board cleaner, then dry it.
  • Do not use rough sponges or strong cleaning chemicals. They scratch the surface, and scratches hold ink.
